The challenge
Transform Europe 1’s native app into a cohesive media experience, making content easier to discover and bringing live radio, on-demand audio and video together without interrupting playback.
My role
Senior Product Designer focused on the native app, working closely with product and development teams.
Co-built the shared design system with the designer responsible for the web experience.
What I did
Conducted user research, facilitated framing workshops and designed app navigation, content discovery and player interactions. Translated findings into prototypes and refined solutions through usability testing and team feedback.
Outcome
A redesigned app connecting discovery and playback, supported by a shared design system built for multiple radio brands, web and native platforms, and light and dark modes.
CHALLENGE
How do you bring different media formats into one continuous experience?
01
Make live and on-demand content easier to discover
02
Keep playback accessible while users explore the app
03
Make switching between listening and watching seamless
04
Build shared foundations across brands and platforms
PRODUCT FRAMING & PRIORISATION
Turning shared ideas into product priorities
I facilitated workshops with Europe 1 stakeholders to surface needs, explore concepts and build a shared product direction. Together, we organised opportunities around content discovery, clearer content relationships and playback continuity.
A value–complexity matrix helped us discuss trade-offs and prioritise features, while mapping user activities to functionality helped define the scope of the first release.

User research
Understanding how listeners make sense of content
Questionnaires explored listeners’ interests.
Card sorting helped us understand how they grouped content and interpreted labels such as “show”, “episode”, “podcast”, “replay” and “live”.Preference testing between two mid-fidelity screens also provided feedback on alternative design directions.
Together, these methods brought a user perspective to product discussions. Findings informed naming and content organisation, alongside product direction and stakeholder priorities shaping the app’s navigation and homepage.
Playback continuity
Keep listening. Keep exploring.
The player was designed as a persistent layer, keeping playback accessible as users explore the app. Content pages provide entry points into playback, while minimised and full-screen states let users move between browsing and media controls.
Listeners can switch between audio and video when both are available, bringing listening and watching into the same experience.Time-shifting also lets them pause and resume live radio.

OUTCOMES
All design deliverables are complete, with development still underway. The outcomes below reflect the delivered design foundations; their impact on reader engagement and conversion remains to be assessed after launch.
Continuous playback
A persistent player connects browsing and playback, keeping media controls accessible as users explore the app.
Connected audio and video
Listeners can move between listening and watching within the same player, with time-shifting bringing more flexibility to live radio.
A unified content experience
Live radio, replays, podcasts, video clips and highlights come together through shared navigation and playback patterns.
Shared foundations across brands
A co-built design system supports native and web experiences across radio brands, with reusable components and integrated light and dark modes.

SOLUTIONS
Beyond the live broadcast
Photography became a structural element of the experience, shaping hierarchy, rhythm and storytelling rather than simply illustrating content.

Large photographic openings and varied image formats give stories different levels of prominence, balancing immersive moments with denser editorial layouts.

Cross-brand design system
Shared foundations. Distinct identities.
Together with the designer responsible for the web experience, we co-built a design system spanning native apps and responsive web across Lagardère’s radio brands.
Shared tokens and reusable components support each brand’s visual identity, with light and dark modes built into the system.Common foundations keep the experiences consistent while allowing interfaces to adapt to their platform and content needs.

CONTEXT
Beyond the live broadcast
Europe 1’s content extended beyond live radio to replays, podcasts and video, but its native app lacked a consistent way to bring them together. The redesign was an opportunity to rethink how listeners discover and consume this content, while establishing shared foundations for Lagardère’s wider radio ecosystem.
